Average:
Average = Sum of observations/Number of observations
Average Speed:
Suppose a man covers a certain distance at x kmph and an equal distance at y kmph.
Then, the average speed during the whole journey is 2xy/x + y kmph.
1.

The average score is = (92 + 94 + 88 + 89 + 91 + 90 + 86 + 90)/8
The average score is = 720/8 = 90.
2.

Average income = (sum of all incomes)/(Number of people).
Average income = (4000 + 2000 + 3000)/3
Average income = 9000/3 = Rs.3000
3.

Average score = (71 + 49 + 52 + 46 + 48 + 52 + 53)/7
Average score = 371/7 = 53.
4.

Cost of 3 dozen mangoes of first variety = 3 x 7 = 21
Cost of 2 dozen of 2nd variety = 2 x 8.5 = 17
Cost of 1 dozen of 3rd variety = 1 x 10 = 10
Total cost of 6 dozen mangoes = Rs 48
∴ Average cost per dozen = 48/6 = Rs. 8
5.

Total age of 5 boys = 19 x 5 = 95
Total age of 6 boys after the new boys joins 6 x 20 = 120
Age of the new boy = 120 95 = 25 year.
6.

Price of 7 kg of wheat = 7 x 14 = Rs 98
Price of 4 kg of wheat = 4 x 8.5 = Rs 34
Total price = Rs 132
Average rate of mixture = 132/11 = Rs 12 per kg.
7.

Total score in the first six tests = 6 x 55 = 330
Total score in the last six tests = 6 x 57 = 342
Score in all seven tests = (Total score in the last six tests + score in the 1st test).
Score in all seven tests = 342 + 50 = 392.
∴ score in the 7th test = (Total score in all 7 tests Total score in first 6 tests)
∴ score in the 7th test = 392 330 = 62 run.
8.

Applying the weighted average rule, the overall average is
= [(76 x 70) + (79 x 60) + (80 x 55)]/(70 + 60 + 55).
Applying the weighted average rule, the overall average is = 78.16
